I wonder sometimes if comparison is a flawed method of understanding things - books, for example. I know I am very inclined to do this: I read and I think - oh, this is a bit like that novel, and characters A and B's relationship reminds me of X and Y's relationship in this book, and so on. My reading bent of late seems to be rather classical. Now, I started it for various reasons mostly involved with clearing my mind, but it proved to be fun. And I am apparently not the one to think so. Carpenter quotes what Tolkien wrote about Lewis as a debater: "He was keen-witted rather than clear-sighted, logical within some given position, but in ranging argument neither lucid nor coherent..." ( The Inklings, p. 216) That's actually one of the things that disturbed me in Lewis's writings and in the way his opinions were described.

There's a book in my to-be-read pile called The Living World of Shakespeare, by John Wain (I decided that while I more or less know Shakespeare's biography, I need something about the plays while reading those plays.
